MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - It's Fire Prevention Week and this year the Midland Fire Department is focusing on the importance of replacing your smoke detectors.

Data from the National Fire Prevention Association shows that only a small percentage of people actually know how old their smoke alarms are or how often they need to be replaced.

If you need to find out how old your smoke alarm is, there's a date of manufacture on the back.

Once you have that date, just do the math and if it's been more than 10 years, it needs to be replaced.

But that's not all you can get out of fire prevention week.

From October 13 through October 15, Midland firefighters will be hanging out at Midland Park Mall to give out fire safety gifts to kids and answer any question you may have about fire safety.
