$68,422 cash seized at Presidio port of entry

PRESIDIO, TX (KWES) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Presidio port of entry seized $68,422 hidden within the dashboard of a car.

CBP officers were conducting a southbound inspection on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. when a car pulled up. The car was selected for an intensive inspection.

While using the X-ray device, the officers noticed something in the dashboard area. Officers found money bundled and wrapped in black tape.

CBP officers seized the money, along with the car.

The driver, Guadalupe Villarreal Johnson, 35, of Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico and the passenger Gina Villarreal Johnson, 30, of Fort Stockton, were arrested and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"CBP officers are working hard to stop the illegal movement of guns, ammunition and unreported currency," said CBP Presidio Port Director John Deputy."Travelers who do not follow federal currency reporting requirements run the risk of losing their currency and may potentially face criminal charges."
