ODESSA, TX (KWES) - A five-year-old boy was found by strangers, blocks away from his school in Odessa.
His mother came to pick him up early but he ended up lost.
The mother said it's her son's first few week in school at Pease Elementary and all of this could have been avoided if her son had been walked to the office.
An Odessa mother said her five year old kindergarten son walked outside of the doors, down 22nd St. for three blocks before arriving to a bank where two strangers picked him up.
"I broke down and I started crying," said the mother. "I told my husband, 'Luckily these people brought him back.'"
It happened when the mother picked up her son early for a dentist appointment. Ector County I.S.D. said the little boy misunderstood when his teacher told him his mom was there. Instead of going to the office, he went outside, to the spot where his mom picks him up after school. Then, wandered off
The boy's mother said it's his first year in school and he didn't know any better.
"He was not stolen, he was not harmed," said the mother. "Any pedophile could have picked him up and I wouldn't have known. No one would have known what would have happened to him or he could have been ran over, it's a busy street!"
E.C.I.S.D. said this is the first time this has happened. A spokesperson for the district said students are shown where multiple buildings are as part of the children's learning process. Now, the district decided teachers will walk outside their classrooms, stand at their door and supervise students until they're at the office.
The mother said she's glad her son is safe and has a message for the couple that saved him.
"I just want to say thank you to the couple that brought my son back," said the mom. "God bless them. My heart is with them forever and I'm forever grateful for what they did."
The mother said she has since withdrawn her son from school and will home school him.
