ODESSA, TX (KWES) -

Odessa College is one step closer to being recognized as the top community college in the nation.

The school is a top ten finalist for the Aspen Prize.

That's from a field of 1,200 schools.

School officials believe being named a finalist for such a prestigious honor helps emphasize what the school is trying to do.

"It's exciting to be a finalist, now we want to win! But being named a finalist is exciting because it helps to support the message that we've been giving for a long time, that our community deserves the best community college in the nation," said Odessa College President, Dr. Gregory D. Williams.

The prize looks at things like whether students complete their certificates, degrees and job placement.

The winning school will be announced in March 2017.
