RANKIN, TX (KWES) -

A state trooper killed in the line of duty in Rankin 40 years ago got a special honor on Thursday.

A portion of Highway 67 in Upton County now bears his name.

State Trooper Sammy Long's watch ended in November of 1976.

Long was chasing a suspect he tried to pull over.

The suspect eventually stopped and opened fire on Trooper Long when Long approached his truck.

The suspect then got out and shot him six times on the ground.

Several speakers including his former partners talked about his dedication to law enforcement.

The dedicated highway will be on U.S. Highway 67 between McCamey and eastward beyond Rankin.

Family friends and colleagues are overjoyed and can't wait to see the sign on the highway.
