MIDLAND, TX (KWES) -

Midland's new Bynum School had its groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday morning.

Parents, teachers and friends had shovels in their hands signaling the landmark achievement.

Bynum School is the only private school in West Texas that provides year round services to students with special needs and their families.

Since the amount of students are rising, the old facility needed to be replaced.

"The school today has 50 students and we are busting at the seams. When this facility is fully open, it will be built for 120 students and it's being built to easily expand as the demands to do so," said Will Abney, co-chair of capital campaign.

The school takes care of special need students from kindergarten through high school.

It also provides a work program for special needs adults to help them grow into helpful and productive members in the community.

The new school is expected to open in 2018.
