One shot after Ector County officer-involved shooting

One man is in the hospital after he allegedly evaded a sheriff's deputy, tried to take away the deputy's gun and then was shot while they wrestled over the weapon.

The Ector County Sheriff's Office says a patrol deputy tried to stop a vehicle just after midnight on Saturday morning in West Odessa. The driver reportedly evaded the deputy and turned off his lights while speeding away.

The pursuit ended at a trailer park in the 8500 block of West Dunn Street.

When officers arrived to assist, they found the deputy wrestling with the suspect, identified as Sergio Vasquez, 22.

Vasquez was bleeding from the stomach area and told the assisting officers that he had been shot.

The patrol deputy told officers that Vasquez had tried to take away his gun and while they were wrestling over it, the suspect was shot.

According to authorities, a search of Vasquez found him in possession of a gram of suspected cocaine.

Vasquez was taken to the hospital and is currently listed in serious condition.

The officer was not injured and the Texas Rangers will be investigating the incident, which is standard in an officer-involved shooting.
