Parents and school staff concerned with overcrowding at Fasken Elementary

Fasken Elementary teachers, parents, and staff are concerned with overcrowding at the school this year.

The Fasken PTA confirms the school's capacity is 800. On the first day of school Monday, there were 891 students. A big leap from last year's total of 560 students.

The biggest class is a kindergarten class, which has 37 students to 1 teacher.

The school expected an increase of 150 to 160 students this year because of the new bilingual program, but growth on Highway 349 led to even more students moving to the district.

School staff and parents presented their concerns to the board in Monday night's meeting.

District administrators say there is no way to know how many students will show up to school on the first day. Administrators will be meeting every afternoon for a week and a half to find solutions to the issue.
