IMPERIAL, TX (KWES) - The Texas Department of Transportation is working on two projects regarding FM 1053.
Over the weekend, repairs were made to the road due to road failures. Officials said the road failures that formed were caused by rain runoff that found a soft spot in the base of the road and washed the foundation out.
TxDOT said there is a geological sag in the area but we're told the road failures appear to be related to rain runoff.
The short term project, according to TxDOT, is to move the center line of the road 21 feet to the east away from the geologic sag in the area. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of the calendar year.
The long term project is TxDOT would like a new road but said, "buying right of way is a very lengthy legal process."
Then officials said that they have to design a brand new road bed, pick a location, have an environmental impact report completed and have surveying and engineering done.
TxDOT said that their best estimate for that would be about five years.
