Homeless man known as 'King Arthur' found beaten, near death in Midland alley

MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - A homeless Midland man remained hospitalized Friday following a brutal attack last week, a local church said.

"King" Arthur Bennett was found in an alley near Grand Buffet on Louisiana Avenue with four broken ribs and a black eye after a stranger jumped him, according to Evan Rogers, founder of Midland's Church Under the Bridge.

Authorities did not confirm if the incident is under investigation.

The 5' tall, 103-pound diabetic was transported Saturday to Midland Memorial Hospital (MMH) in critical condition, Rogers said, and received treatment for a serious infection caused by his broken ribs.

Bennett was breathing on his own and no longer in critical condition Friday, church leaders said.

A motive for the attack has not been identified.

"He is the most caring individual on the streets of Midland," Rogers wrote on a GoFundMe page created to help cover Bennett's medical bills. "On a regular basis, the team from Church Under the Bridge will check on him and make sure he is doing okay... He has never asked us for anything. He simply wants to make people smile. He has touched the lives of many people in our community."
