Governor Abbott to ask legislature to pass Police Protection Act

AUSTIN, TEXAS (KWES) - Governor Greg Abbott announced Monday that he would request that the legislature pass the Police Protection Act in the 2017 session.

The proposal will make it a hate crime for anyone to commit a crime against a law enforcement officer out of bias against the police.

The act will also increase criminal penalties for any offense where the victim is a law enforcement officer, even if it doesn't qualify as a hate crime.
