ODESSA, TX (KWES) - Concerned citizens are planning a peaceful march at Memorial Gardens in Odessa to try and advocate to relocate, rather than euthanize, some of the geese and ducks.
The rally, named "SAVE Our Ducks!," is planned for 7 p.m. on 42nd St., between Lynbrook Ave. and John Ben Shepperd Pkwy.
Organizer of the Facebook event Gabriel Lopez hopes to bring awareness to the group's desire to relocate the birds and encourages rally-goers to bring signs.
According to City of Odessa Public Information Officer Andrea Goodson, the park has a problem with overpopulation of the birds and that with that comes an abundance of fecal matter that carries bacteria harmful to humans, especially children.
The increased excrement also leads to decreased oxygen levels in the water, which in turn can harm other wildlife, like turtles.
Goodson also points out that most of the birds cannot fly due to a condition called "Angel Wings" that occurs when they are fed too many carbohydrates (i.e. bread).
