MIDLAND, TX (KWES) -

As the country gets ready to celebrate the Fourth of July, the Texas Department of Public Safety is taking steps to keep road travelers safe.

From July 1 to July 4, DPS troopers will work with law enforcement from across the state in searching for drunk drivers, speeding, seat belt and other traffic violators. They are, "calling on Texans to help keep our roadways and communities safe."

They issued some warnings for drivers including don't drink and drive, slow down, monitor weather conditions and buckle up.

Last year, they made 469 DWI arrests, 7,211 speeding citations and 1,156 seatbelt child safety citations.
