JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson residents have received notice that the city recently violated a drinking water requirement in regard to its treatment methods.

Public Works Director Kishia Powell says the facility's corrosion control had not been "optimized," which explains the technique violation under the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations.

Powell says fluctuating pH and alkalinity levels of the city's water as it leaves the treatment plant have historically caused the water to be corrosive, which makes it more likely to corrode lead pipes across the city, causing lead to leach into the water.

Public Works officials said this contributed to recent elevated lead levels in residents' water.

In June, 2015, Jackson sampled water from the taps of 58 homes and discovered elevated lead levels in 13 of those samples.
