Faculty and friends at Odessa College try to move on after student dies on campus

ODESSA, TX (KWES) - Classes at Odessa College may be done for the year but the mood on campus Monday was somber as faculty and friends deal with the loss of one of their own. Taylor Fritze, a 21 year old freshman passed away over the weekend after school officials found her unresponsive in her dorm room.

Manie Mendoza, a friend said, "It was a shock because I barely found out about it earlier today and it tragic that her life was cut short."

He described Fritze as selfless.

"She did a lot for a lot of people that knew her. You couldn't ask for a better person and a better friend," said Mendoza.

Mendoza added Fritze, a graduate of Permian High touched everyone that knew her.

"We talked about different things she was very caring. She talked about her nephew or her mom," said Mendoza.

School officials said there are protocols they follow when a student passes away and there are services for students who may have been affected.

Cheri Dalton, Odessa College Media Relations Director said, "Once we have a deceased student then all records are closed at that time, that's out of respect for the family. There is counseling available to students."

Dalton expressed condolences on behalf of the school and Mendoza wished to tell his friend one last thing.

"I'll see you later," said Mendoza.

Odessa Police says this is an ongoing investigation and they do not suspect foul play was involved.
