ODESSA, TX (KWES) - Odessa Police released a composite sketch of the suspect just last week, but say it was the suspect's social media account that helped the victim identify her attacker.
Police arrested Brandon Lamar Rone, 38, Wednesday in connection with a the sexual assault of a woman in a motel room.
"He was taken into custody last (Wednesday) night at approximately 7:30 p.m. for aggravated sexual assault," said Cpl. Steve LeSueur of the Odessa Police Department.
Police say on April 13, Rone knocked on the room of a woman staying at a motel on Highway 80 and JBS Parkway. When she opened the door, Rone showed a knife and went inside. He put the knife to her throat and demanded her to take off her clothes. That's when the victim said he raped her.
After the assault ended, police say Rone told the victim to rinse her mouth and get in the shower for 10 minutes. The victim says once he left he room, she ran to the office for help and asked them to call police.
Police say social media played a key role in the investigation and in arresting Rone.
"We received some tips. However, with this specific investigation, it was a combination of a few things. The sketch helped. Social media helped, along with other information that was received during the course of the investigation," said LeSueur.
The arrest affidavit said the victim talked with an acquaintance and found out she also was assaulted by Rone. After looking at his Facebook page, she was able to positively identify him.
Police are unsure if this case is linked with another sexual assault that happened a few months ago at a motel in the same area. They say both crimes were committed similarly but have not been able to connect the two.
