Off-duty officer apprehends hit and run suspect in Odessa

ODESSA, TX (KWES) - One man is behind bars after being caught by an off-duty officer.

Odessa police were called out to the area of 42nd Street and Andrews Highway to assist an off-duty officer who was in pursuit of a man.

Police said the man, who was later identified as Derrick Collins, 38, was later caught in the 4200 block of Andrews Highway.

The off-duty officer reported that while he was at a business, he saw a crash involving a red 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier, a white 2005 Nissan Frontier and a white 2005 Ford Escape.

The report said the driver of the Cavalier caused the accident and immediately fled the scene.

That's when the officer showed his badge and told the man to stop.

Authorities add that following further investigation, Collins had a prior conviction out of Midland County for evading.

Collins is charged with evading arrest or detention with prior convictions, possession of marijuana, driving while license invalid with prior convictions and leading the scene of an accident.
