ODESSA, TX (KWES) - A five year old sexual assault case in Odessa has finally been solved and it's all thanks to DNA evidence.
The affidavit said the assault happened back on September 9 of 2011.
Family members say a 16-year-old girl reported that two men had sexually assaulted her.
Those men were later identified as Jose P. Canales and another suspect.
But because there wasn't enough evidence, no arrests were made.
Canales DNA was entered into a system in El Paso and that's when the Odessa Police Department got the evidence they needed.
A warrant was obtained and Canales was charged with the crime.
Although police were able to connect Canales with the crime, they do not have enough evidence to charge the second suspect.
