Eunice police make arrest in homicide investigation

Eunice Police Department have made an arrest in connection with a body found Friday afternoon.

At 1:45 p.m., the Eunice Police Department and EMS were dispatched to 1405 Avenue A in regards to a man with a head injury. The caller advised the was unconscious.

Upon arrival, police and EMS located Ramon Serna, 57, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Based on witness statements, police say an altercation had taken place between Serna and 52-year-old Ismael Silva. Silva fled the scene in a camper prior to the officers arrival.

Eunice police contacted Eunice School administrators and advised them they were looking for a person of interest in a suspicious death. The school was put on lock down while police looked for Silva. He was located minutes later and arrested on an open count of murder and one count of tampering with evidence.

Investigators are still trying to determine what events led to the man's death. New Mexico State Police have been called in to help assist with a thorough investigation.

Serna's body was sent to the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator for autopsy.
