GOLDSMITH, TX (KWES) - A local park is going through a big renovation, after the community has raised funds for nearly two years. $55,000 are going into the project in the city of Goldsmith.
Ector County Commissioners Court approved the playground project Monday.
The funds are there, the resources are there, all that's left is for Goldsmith City Council to approve the project during their meeting Thursday.
Goldsmith resident, Crystal Carson took the playground project into her own hands after a city council member who had the idea got sick.
"I started out with $0, this was just a dream I had for these kids," said Carson.
Carson said she loves the kids of the community like her own and it's important for them to have a place to go.
"It's important for the kids to have that social interaction, they learn so much on a playground. It's not just about playing, it's about social skills and developmental skills," said Carson.
After fundraisers, donations and the city of Goldsmith matching every dollar the playground is now a $55,000 project.
The playground upgrades will include two new playgrounds, new swings, teeter-totters, a jungle gym, baseball and soccer fields, a volleyball area and the basketball court will double as a tennis court.
Carson said starting wasn't easy, she had research rules, federal guidelines and look for a contractor. Carson said she didn't get discouraged or thought about give up, all for the kids.
"Seeing them smile hearing them laugh and just knowing that no matter what's going on in their lives whether it's at home, school that just for those five minutes they're just free to be a kid," said Carson.
If approved, the park is expected to open during the summer 2016.
