ECTOR COUNTY, TX (KWES) - Officials voted unanimously Monday during an Ector County Commissioners' Court meeting to approve the installation of speed limit signs near Murry Fly Elementary School.
The 30 mph signs will be posted on West Westmart Street, West Westbend Street and North Lakewood Avenue, officials said.
West Odessa residents spoke out Thursday during a town hall meeting led by Precinct 1 Commissioner Eddy Shelton to voice concerns about reckless drivers on roads surrounding Murry Fly.
The area also lacks law enforcement presence during school arrival and dismissal times, parents said.
Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson attended Thursday's town hall meeting and discussed assigning a deputy to patrol the area, but said his department may not have enough people to constantly oversee Murry Fly while responding to calls throughout the county.
One school parent said installing speed limit signs "wouldn't hurt"; however, reckless drivers may ignore the 30 mph limit if authorities fail to actively ticket violators, she added.
"Some of them go by so fast, they probably won't even notice the new signs," she said.
