STONE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

A series of monuments are on display around Stone County. They're murals made out of mosaic tiles. As a matter of fact, Stone County has been designated as Mississippi's Mural County because these unique creations tell stories about the area's rich history.

"This one has to do with the lumber industry. We show all the pine trees which made the industry work," said artist Elizabeth Veglia.

Veglia has worked to memorialize the timber industry and other aspects of life that have been such a big part of this area. Stone County is celebrating its centennial this year and the mural project is a great way to highlight the variety of things from the county's past.

"They talk about railroading, and the pickle factory. They talk about timber and this rich wonderful community and the people who live here," according to      Betsy Rowell with Stone County Economic Development.

This is a county-wide project, so a lot of people are involved including art students from Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston.

"We teach the students skills. When we bring in an artist like Elizabeth Veglia, they get to apply classroom skills to a real life situation," MGCCC Art Teacher Sandra Cassibry said.

Six of the murals are on display at Blaylock Park in downtown Wiggins. A new monument was just put up near the courthouse. There are 31 in all around the county.
