ODESSA, TX (KWES) - A substitute teacher was arrested Friday morning at Buddy West Elementary School and charged with public intoxication, Ector County Independent School District (ECISD) administrators said.
Lynette Smith was removed from her classroom and reported to authorities after a student noticed she appeared to be intoxicated, according to district spokesperson Derrick Conway.
"District Police confirmed [she] had consumed an alcoholic beverage and was intoxicated," ECISD officials said in a press release.
Investigators revealed Smith "had alcohol in her vehicle [parked on school property] and went to her vehicle during a break to consume the alcohol."
Smith was arrested and booked into the Ector County Detention Center, officials confirmed.
If convicted of public intoxication, a class C misdemeanor, she faces a fine of up to $500.
Smith had been employed by the school district since October, administrators said, and was terminated Friday.
