ODESSA, TX (KWES) - The Odessa Police Academy recruits are another step closer to graduation.

This week, the 14 recruits have been working on their firearm skills.

Sgt. Carlos Chavez said the recruits put in a full 48 hours into learning safety, malfunctions and operations of a firearm.

The soon-to-be-officers participated in various shooting scenarios.

They have to be able to shoot accurately from as close as three feet all the way to 25 feet.

"When it all comes down to it, it could be a matter of life or death, depending on how well trained they are in case something were to happen," said Cpl. Steve LeSueur with the Odessa Police Department.

The Odessa Police Academy recruits will graduate on June 17.
