ODESSA, TX (KWES) -

Russell Francis Huertas was found guilty of attempted capital murder and aggravated assault of a public servant by an Ector County jury, Tuesday afternoon.

Ector County District Attorney Bobby Bland says it took the jury 30 minutes to deliberate.

The punishment phase will begin tomorrow.

On March 12, 2015 Odessa Police were called out to the area of 18th & Sam Houston in reference to a suspicious person who was suspected of burglarizing vehicles.

While officers were on the way to the scene, dispatch advised that witnesses were following the suspect near the area of 20th Street and Kermit Highway.

After the officers identified the suspect based on witness descriptions, Officer Raymond Feril exited his vehicle to investigate.

After Feril got out of the vehicle, he asked the suspect, later identified as Huertas, to stop. Huertas didn't stop and continued walking off.

As Feril approached Huertas, he began to run and a foot chase ensued.

When Officer Feril caught up to him, Huertas pulled out a knife and stabbed Feril once in the back.
