MERTZON, Texas (AP) - The mayor of a West Texas town has quit and the operations manager was suspended amid a public corruption case involving theft allegations.
The San Angelo Standard-Times (http://bit.ly/1pxhnZH ) reports Mertzon Mayor Carol Shaw resigned Monday night. Jim Rose faces charges of theft by a public servant and official oppression.
Council members in Mertzon, a town of about 800, suspended Rose with pay. Complaints accuse the 69-year-old Rose of using municipal funds for personal expenses and making a sexual comment to a female city employee.
Rose was arrested March 14 on allegations he used a city-issued credit card to pay $2,300 to have a rebuilt engine, from a city vehicle, put into his personal vehicle. He was freed on $25,000 bond.
Messages left for Rose and Shaw weren't immediately returned Tuesday.
