CARLSBAD, NM (KWES) -

A gross discovery was made at a Carlsbad playground over the weekend.

The discovery was made at the Playground on the Pecos (Project Playground).

Several disturbing images were posted on social media showing piles of human excrement were found at the playground.

In a statement, Mayor Dale Janway, said, "we share in your disgust and, like you, realize that it is past time to take a stand and do more to protect this beautiful facility."

Janway said that the public works department is working to clean up the issue and major renovations are on the way to the playground.

Some of those renovations include adding a 6 foot tall iron fence to keep people out of the playground at night.

Police are increasing patrols in the area following the discovery.

City officials said the efforts to renovate the park will be completed through a combination of volunteer efforts.

If you'd like to volunteer to help out, you can contact Ann Cross at (575) 887-3798.
