Women band together to support breastfeeding mothers

MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - Earlier this week, gathering of women plan to visit the Midland Park Mall and breastfeed their children by pushing back against the negativity some women faced when feeding their children at the mall in the past.

Candy Powell, a registered nurse and the lactation consultant at Medical Center Hospital, spoke about the benefits of breastfeeding.

"The health benefits of breastfeeding are so numerous you can't even hardly begin to list them. For a baby, it reduces risk of which is ear infections, GI disturbances, things with their gut, certain types of childhood leukemias and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes later in life."

Medical Center Hospital hosts a weekly baby café where breastfeeding mothers can go to learn more about the benefits of breastfeeding, speaking with a certified lactation consultant or just find a friendly and private environment to comfortably feed their newborn child.

A group of mothers created the "Let's Support Public Breastfeeding" event on Facebook and they invited supporters to show up to the Midland Park Mall on Saturday, March 26 at noon.
