ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KWES) - A couple of convicts that escaped from a prisoner transport van near Artesia Wednesday night are still on the loose.

It's still a mystery how Joseph Cruz and Lionel Clah got from Southern New Mexico to Albuquerque.

Hours after they escaped, the duo were caught on camera in the lobby of a motel near the university of Albuquerque.

Police say at some point they ditched their shackles and white jumpsuits in favor of regular clothing.

Law enforcement spent all of Thursday looking for the pair.

Finally, someone told Albuquerque police they spotted Cruz and Clah driving down a street.

Officers followed it until they say Cruz and Clah jumped out and ran and so did a woman.

Once it got dark, dozens of armed officers started searching on foot.

The nearby neighborhood was put on lockdown but officers called off the search early Friday morning.

The search continues for the escaped convicts.
