2 prisoners escape from NM transport van

ARTESIA, NM (KWES) -

A search is underway for two violent prisoners who escaped near Artesia, New Mexico.

Authorities are looking for Lionel Clah, 29, and Joseph Cruz, 32.

According to the New Mexico State Police, the two men escaped around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night from a prisoner transport van during a New Mexico Department of Corrections prisoner transport.

Authorities are asking anyone residing or traveling in the area of Artesia and Roswell to lock their doors and don't pick up hitchhikers.

Lionel Clah is described as a Native American male, 5'11" tall, weighing 175 pounds with brown eyes and black hair.

Clah is wanted for crimes of armed robbery with a deadly weapon and assault with intent to commit a violent felony upon a peace officer.

Joseph Cruz is described as a Hispanic male, 5'5" tall, weighing 165 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair.

Cruz is wanted for crimes of first degree murder, attempted first degree murder and child abuse.

These men are considered dangerous and authorities are asking you not to approach or try to apprehend them.
