Affidavit: Son admits to shooting parents in Odessa

ODESSA, TX (KWES) - New details have been released in connection with a teen being arrested and charged for the shooting and killing of his parents.

The shooting happened in the 5300 block of Conley Place just before 5 a.m. Wednesday morning.

An arrest affidavit states that James Gabriel McDonald, 17, admitted to detectives that he shot and killed both of his parents with his 9mm handgun while they slept.

Just before the shooting, the affidavit stated, that James McDonald's sister, said that James came into her room and told her that he was going to shoot their parents. She thought he was kidding and moments later she heard two gunshots.

James parents, James Gregory McDonald, 52, and Jana McDonald, 52, were found dead by police when they responded to the scene.

James Gabriel McDonald was later arrested and charged with one count of capital murder.

Ector County ISD reacts to shooting

Ector County ISD administrators have confirmed that James McDonald, 17, was a sophomore at Permian High School.

Administrators said crisis counselors have been at Permian High School all day and will remain on campus throughout the afternoon and into Thursday. The ECISD said counselors will also be at Nimitz Junior High, which is where McDonald went to middle school.

The release added, "this news is devastating not only for many of our students and staff members but also for our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McDonald family, and friends who are suffering through this tragedy."

More about the victims

We've learned that James Gregory McDonald was the marketing president at a Security Bank branch in Odessa.

Security Bank said in a statement, "we are saddened to hear of the deaths of Gregg and his wife Jana."

Prayer/Worship scheduled for tonight

NewsWest 9 has just learned that Mid-Cities Church, the church for Gregg and Jana McDonald, who were killed this morning, will be holding a worship and prayer service tonight in the sanctuary.

The service will begin at 7 p.m. and run until 8:30 p.m.

The service will be a come-and-go worship and prayer.

Mid-Cities is located at 8700 State Highway 191 in Midland and the sanctuary is through the west main doors.
