Family searching for justice in hit and run crash

ECTOR COUNTY, TX (KWES) - A cross was placed near the crash site where Joseph Cervantes, 31, lost his life in a hit and run accident on Valentine's Day. His family and friends have come together to support one another and search for those responsible.

"You don't leave a human being on the side of the road to die," said David Luna, a family friend.

In the early morning hours on Valentine's Day, Cervantes was hit while he was outside of his vehicle on Highway 385. The driver and the passenger of the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado, who hit him, fled the scene on foot.

"Maybe if they stayed, something would have changed or maybe just to hold his hand so he doesn't die by himself," said Luna.

Family and friends of Joseph have all banded together during this difficult time. They say it has been tough and are desperate for answers.

"I was not given the opportunity to tell my best friend, my brother, 'Goodbye.' It shouldn't have gotten to that point. It's frustrating. It's devastating that these guys are still out there," said Arturo Alvarez, a family member.

DPS is investigating the crash but the family says it isn't enough. They feel more should be done to bring the people responsible to justice.

"We want you to take this seriously. We want you to take it as if it was one of your family members. Put in the same effort that you would if it was someone you cared about. He deserves it," said Luna.

All the family is left with are memories. Joseph's parents say they have accepted what happened to their son and are praying for whoever did this.

"We forgive you. We forgive you. Come forward and find your peace," said Bernardo Marquez, his father.

DPS says they not releasing any additional information because the the investigation is ongoing.
