COMANCHE, Texas (AP) - One person was killed and about two-dozen inmates injured in a collision involving a Texas prison bus.
Robert Hurst, spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, says the bus carrying 31 inmates and two guards collided Friday morning with a pickup near Gustine, about 90 miles from Waco.
Twenty-one of the inmates were transported to various hospitals in the region and five of them taken by helicopter. The remaining 10 inmates were taken to the TDCJ prison unit in Gatesville, which has an infirmary.
Hurst says none of the injuries are considered life-threatening. The two guards were not hurt.
Department of Public Safety Sgt. Bryan Witt says the pickup failed to yield at a stop sign. The driver died at the scene.
The bus was traveling from Abilene to Huntsville.
