Suspect killed, deputy wounded in Jal shooting

JAL, NM. (KWES) - New details have been released regarding a shooting near Jal, New Mexico, that left a sheriff's deputy wounded.

The shooting happened Monday night, about 16 miles west of Jal.

Lea county sheriff's deputies responded to a home for a break-in call in the 100 block of Madera Road.

The suspect has been identified as Guadalupe Sauceda, 52, of Hobbs.

Authorities say he reportedly shot at the two deputies when they arrived.

One of the deputies was wounded and Sauceda was killed.

It's still unclear exactly what Sauceda was doing at the Madera Road home.

The injured deputy was treated for his leg wound and has since been released from the hospital.

New Mexico State Police are now leading the ongoing investigation into the shooting.
