ODESSA, TX (KWES) - Texas Department of Public Safety said not only could you be seriously injured if you don't wear your seat belt, but you are also breaking the law.
Texas DPS Public Information Officer, Trooper Justin Baker said, "When it comes to wearing your seat belt it either prevents you from being injured or significantly can reduce injury."
DPS believes that drivers especially with young children need to know how to properly install child safety seats.
"In Texas, we have a 70-80% misuse of child safety seats," said Baker.
In Texas, wearing a seat belt is a state law.
"If you're not wearing a seat belt you could be issued a citation which would be a fine up to $250. If you have a child that's not in a child safety seat or not in a booster seat then it would be a fine as well as a moving violation," said Baker.
DPS says to always check with your manufacturer when installing any child safety seats.
