LEA COUNTY, NM (KWES) - New Mexico State Police are investigating a Lea County incident that began Monday night as a break-in and escalated to gunfire, authorities said.
An unidentified sheriff's deputy responded around 11 p.m. to a breaking and entering call in the 100 block of Madera Road, approximately 16 miles west of Jal.
Both the deputy and suspect were injured in the exchange of gunfire, a source close to the suspect said.
Emergency scanner reports indicated the deputy sustained a leg wound, according to a KWES media partner based in Hobbs.
Authorities declined to release details about their injuries and said Wednesday the shooting remained under investigation.
