MIDLAND-ODESSA, TX (KWES) - So far, six teens have been arrested in a recent string of car thefts and burglaries in Midland and Odessa. Officials from both departments said more will be on the way.
Corporal Steve LeSeueur of the Odessa Police Department said, "They are connected. The stolen vehicles and the auto burglaries are all connected. We are working hand in hand with the Midland Police Department. It is believed there are several more subjects working in conjunction with this current group."
Detective Trent Sellers of the City of Midland's Auto Theft Division said, "We look at them as opportunists."
Officials believed since the two cities are so close it makes it easier for the thefts to occur.
"This last rash of stolen vehicles, we were finding a lot of ID's and credit cards from people that resided in Odessa," said Sellers.
Officials also believed the suspects in the string of thefts and burglaries were looking for guns.
"It's just so important to please do not leave valuables in your vehicle, especially weapons," said LeSeueur.
"Firearms are a huge thing, do not leave your firearms in your vehicle or anything of value that you don't want stolen," said Sellers.
Police said they have an idea of what happens to the cars when they are stolen and rely on each other during this joint investigation.
"We get tips and we act on them. I'll call Odessa or I'll call the guys I work with at DPS and we put a game plan together and we go after it," said Sellers.
Six vehicles have been recovered by the Odessa and Midland police departments.
