HOBBS, NM (KWES) - Authorities were unable to determine the cause of a deadly structure fire or identify the victim following a day-long investigation, Hobbs officials said Tuesday evening.
Flames broke out early Tuesday morning at a metal, shed-like structure at 607 N Leech St, according to city spokesperson Meghan Mooney.
She could not confirm what time the blaze started but said flames were extinguished shortly after 5 a.m.
Firefighters realized somebody was likely inside when they noticed an unoccupied vehicle parked nearby, according to officials.
"The fire was so bad, they had trouble finding the victim at first," said Mooney.
Authorities could not determine the age or gender of the unidentified body, she added.
The medical examiner's office is expected to release more information within several weeks.
Investigators said they have not ruled out arson.
