ODESSA, TX (KWES) - An Odessa mother and her boyfriend were arrested after her one-year-old son was taken to the hospital with extensive facial bruising and a laceration, officials said Tuesday.
Cristal Mendez, 29, and Fabian Contreras, 30, were arrested Thursday by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and charged with felonies.
Authorities said Mendez, the mother of the injured boy, is charged with endangering a child; Contreras, her boyfriend, is charged with injury to a child.
Officers responded to Medical Center Hospital on January 21 in reference to an injured child, according to Odessa Police.
The complainant identified the boy as her grandson, authorities said, and revealed his face was covered in bruises when she picked him up that morning.
"She was told the child sustained bruising from wrestling," Odessa Police spokesman Cpl. Steve LeSueur said. "The complainant took the child to the hospital because she was concerned with his welfare."
Detectives later located the child's mother and questioned her about the injuries.
"Mendez reported that her child sustained the bruising from her boyfriend," said LeSueur. "Mendez reported that her one-year-old child and Contreras were striking heads together."
Investigation revealed the injuries were inconsistent with her account due to the "amount of acute bruises the child sustained," according to police.
Arrest warrants were immediately obtained for Mendez and Contreras.
Authorities did not confirm if the child had been placed in the care of relatives or Child Protective Services.
