Judge denies mistrial in McWilliams case, murder trial continues

BREWSTER COUNTY, TX (KWES) - Testimony continued Friday in the murder trial of an Alpine man charged with shooting and killing a former Kilgore High School football coach.

Keith McWilliams was arrested after coach Trey Sands disappeared in October 2014 during a hunting trip, authorities said.

McWilliams later confessed to the murder, according to court testimony, and led Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson to Sands' body.

Trial proceedings began Monday in Brewster County's 83rd District Court.

Judge Roy Ferguson denied a defense motion for a mistrial Thursday following a dispute over evidence.

Defense attorney Bart Medley claimed prosecutors neglected to properly share evidence with him. District Attorney Rod Ponton maintained missing materials were not left out intentionally.

The trial is scheduled to continue Monday morning.
