MIDLAND, TX (KWES) -

Family and friends said their last goodbyes at the funeral of Braden Joplin on Monday.

The 25-year-old was a Midland Lee graduate and was a student at Texas Tech University.

He was volunteering for Dr. Ben Carson's campaign in Iowa when the van he was in hit a patch of ice.

The van flipped on its side and was hit by a truck.

Joplin died from his injuries.

The three other people on the van were treated and released.

Texas Tech University sent out this statement last week on Joplin saying, "the loss of life, especially one of our own, is always tragic. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Braden Joplin during this difficult time.*

Carson temporarily suspended his campaign in order to meet with Joplin's family following the accident.

Several other presidential candidates released statements expressing their concern and sympathy for the situation.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
