State trooper, deputies save woman from icy water

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

An Arkansas State Trooper and Mississippi County Deputies saved a woman trapped in icy water after a wreck Wednesday.

The wreck was one of many in Region 8 due to slick road conditions.

First Class State Trooper Todd Harris responded first to the two-vehicle wreck along Interstate 55 at the Mississippi County and Crittenden County line.

When Harris arrived, he noticed one truck had hit a concrete wall and flipped over in the flooded creek below.

When Harris realized a woman was trapped in the icy water he jumped into action.

“Because of the icy conditions the ambulances, paramedics and any emergency personnel were spread thin because of the amount of accidents,” Harris said.

Harris said he was able to help the woman out before paramedics arrived so she could get out of the cold water.

“State police are trained at basic life support and I have furthered my studies and can make basic life support decisions,” Harris said.

Mississippi County Sheriff Deputies Matt Malone and Jay Bohannon arrived after Harris and assisted in the rescue.

Malone waded through the water with Harris to carry the woman out.

“We carried her from the truck, through the water and to the bank to the paramedics,” Harris said.

Malone also carried his K-9, who assisted the police, across the icy water so the dog would not get wet.

Harris said this was nothing out of the ordinary for them. He said it was just another day on the job.

“It is my job," he said. "I love my job and that is why I am a trooper. There is no other way to put it that is my job."
