ODESSA, TX (KWES) - Some neighbors in Odessa got a strange surprise when they went to check their mail on Tuesday. They say their mailbox was taken without any warning.
Karen Jones lives near the mailbox, but says she didn't notice anything wrong until she went to get her mail.
"I realized I was at the wrong one and when I stepped to the side, I realized the mailbox was missing," said Karen Jones, a resident of Stonegate.
That's when she got in her car to go to the post office on 52nd Street.
"I was informed by a mail person that it had been stolen," said Jones.
Other residents in the area were told something different by the same post office.
"I heard from someone else in the neighborhood that it was taken for repairs," said Jones.
The post office says that the mailbox was hit or damaged, possibly by someone trying to steal mail but they say they did remove the mailbox themselves.
"It would have been nice to have been informed from the U.S. Postal Service that it was taken out for repair or what was going on with it," said Jones.
Residents in Stonegate are now left picking up their mail from the local post office on 52nd Street. The post office does not have a time frame on when the mailbox will be replaced.
