ODESSA, TX (KWES) - The anonymous Facebook postings about burglarizing homes in the area are not illegal but Odessa Police wants everyone to remain vigilant.

Corporal Steve LeSueur says, "We know on Facebook, anyone can say anything. However there's no validity to them. It's important to be aware of your surroundings, not just during the holiday season but at all times."

There are also many ways to protect your home during a burglary.

"You know alarm systems are great, a lot more people now are getting alarm systems along with surveillance video at their houses. So that's a great way to detour a crime," says LeSueur.

The Odessa Police takes every single call or tip seriously.

"Every single day the Odessa Police Department responds to suspicious calls. Whether it's suspicious activity, suspicious persons, a suspicious vehicle, a lot of people are hesitant because they think it's unnecessary or they don't want to waste our time. However it's important to know that we respond to those types of calls every day and its those types of calls that lead to great arrests," says LeSueur.

Odessa Police says if you are ever in a situation where someone is inside your home, you have the right to protect yourself.
