Evacuation Orders Remain in Effect in Gaines County

Some families in Gaines County still can't go home.

An evacuation order is still in place after an oil well blowout on Tuesday.

Tabula Rosa Partners, who operates the field, says they were injecting CO2 into the ground to recover oil when they experienced a problem with the casing.

That's when the blowout happened.

The sheriff's office says a dangerous chemical, known as hydrogen sulfide or H2S, was released into the air.

H2S can be deadly when inhaled.

There is no word if those fumes have been contained.

Tabula Rosa says to their knowledge there has been no injuries or significant property damage.

Several families in the area were evacuated and have not been allowed to return home.
