An Ice Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for the northern counties (Borden, Dawson, Gaines and Scurry) beginning tonight until Saturday at noon. In addition, a Winter Weather Watch has been issued for Andrews, Howard, Martin, Ector, Glasscock, Loving Midland, Mitchell, Reeves, Winkler, and Lea Counties as well as the Guadalupe Mountains and the Davis/Apache Mountains from Friday night through Saturday morning.
A strong cold front is set to arrive in West Texas early Friday morning. This boundary will bring in strong winds, colder air and rain! Since the front will arrive early in the morning, temperatures will steadily drop throughout the day. As temperatures plummet to near or below freezing, rain is expected to change or mix in with freezing rain. Extreme caution should be taken at this time when conducting vehicles, especially on bridges and overpasses. On Sunday, temperatures will be warm enough so that all precipitation is liquid rain.
Ice accumulations of 0.01" to 0.50" can be expected across the northern Permian Basin counties. Remember, it doesn't take a lot of ice to impact travel! As far as rainfall amounts, up to three inches of rain can be expected through Sunday.
