ECISD Looking Into Teacher Housing, Experiencing Teacher Shortage

ECTOR COUNTY, TX (KWES) - Ector County Independent School District is currently experiencing a teacher shortage. Over 150 teacher positions are posted on their website that need to be filled. According to ECISD Public Information Officer, Mike Adkins, this shortage has several contributing factors, including teacher shortages in the entire state of Texas.

Housing has been an issue for incoming teachers the last few years. This past August, the district once again started offering housing for their teachers at the Barbara Chancellor House, the house features 16 bedroom suites, which are all full at the moment.

According to, the average monthly rent for a one bedroom apartment in Odessa is $964, the rent for a suite in the Barbara Chancellor House is currently $500.

Acquiring the new housing facility off W. 2nd St in Odessa would provide a rent controlled option for new incoming teachers. This building is currently being used as apartments and has 31 units.
