ECTOR COUNTY, TX (KWES) - With Halloween and the big game between OHS and Permian this weekend, authorities are on the lookout for underage drinking. Several agencies have come together to put together a task force. It's all hands on deck starting Thursday night.
The Odessa Police Department has teamed up with the Ector County Sheriff's Department and the Permian Basin Drug and Alcohol Counsel to crack down on underage drinking.
"We will be in full force this weekend. We are going to have extra officers specifically designated for the underage drinking parties," said Steve LeSueur with the Odessa Police Department.
The Odessa Police Department says underage drinking is a problem that needs to be brought to light.
"Alcohol and drug abuse is a huge issue here in Odessa. The Odessa Police Department is constantly responding to suicide threats and suicide calls and overdose calls. A lot of those unfortunately involve teens," said LeSueur.
This weekend, they are going to be on the lookout for underage drinking, but it's not just the teens they are trying to bust.
"It's not just the teens that we are going to be looking out for but it's also the adults. If it is found that an adult is furnishing alcohol to minors, they can be arrested," said LeSueur.
The Permian Basin Drug and Alcohol Counsel has a message to adults about this growing problem.
"The best way to prevent it is through education. Education and conversation and be open to what kids have to say," said Mellessa Brenem with the Permian Basin Drug and Alcohol Counsel.
Odessa Police has a message to teens who have plans to drink this weekend.
"It's not worth it because we will be out looking for them," said LeSueur.
