Odessa Man Accused of Choking Girlfriend

An Odessa man is now behind bars after choking his girlfriend and trying to run her off the road.

Police were called out to the area of 31st Street and Chesnut on October 10.

They spoke with a 17-year-old girl who said her boyfriend, Carlos Cortez, 23, had choked her with her jacket.

A week later, the girl, along with a 26-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy, filed a police report against Cortez.

They told police Cortez had followed them in his car, thrown a tire iron at them and had entered the car through a window to hit the boy.

They also said Cortez had swerved at them causing their car to go into oncoming traffic.

Cortez was arrested on Friday and charged with assault by strangulation and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
