COLUMBIA, S.C. - An incident at a South Carolina high school Monday where a police officer appeared to body slam a female student and drag her across a classroom is now under investigation.

The confrontation, captured on cellphone video has also drawn intense criticism on social media.

The local sheriff in Richland County says he has asked the FBI to look into this case.

“I think he took it way too far. I don't think a woman should be handled like that in any circumstance,” said Senior Student, Candace Cooper.

"They were wrong both ways, because she should never fought back. And deputy fields should never picked her up like that,” said Sophomore Student, Torian Ward.

The school district's Black Parents Association and the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina have all called the deputy's actions "egregious.”
